By Ullmann condensation of 4-chlorobenzoic acid (I) with 3-hydroxybenzonitrile (II) by means of Cu or CuI and K2CO3 in DMF at 170 C. The same reaction can also be performed with 4-bromo- or 4-iodobenzoic acids instead of 4-chlorobenzoic acid (I).
